Inaugural “Duplicate Poker World Championship” Set to Take Place in 2008
U.S. Based Online Poker Site Announces First-Ever Championship Series – Most Americans are Eligible to Enter
New York, NY (Feb 19, 2008) – DuplicatePoker.com announced today the creation of the first-ever “Duplicate Poker World Championship.” The inaugural competition aims to determine the world’s best Duplicate Poker player. Although the finals will take place in the fall of 2008, players are now eligible to compete and earn their chance to play in the world championship.
Duplicate Poker’s innovative twist on Texas hold ‘em removes the luck of the draw. Instead, poker players must rely on skill to win. Players in corresponding seats positioned at different tables are dealt identical poker hands – hence the name “duplicate.” Results are measured by how each hand is played and by chips either won or lost in comparison with other players who player the exact same cards. Since Duplicate Poker is viewed as a skill game, it’s legal in most jurisdictions within the United States.
The world championship series will combine both online and live poker. Initially, all qualifying players will do so by playing online at DuplicatePoker.com. Qualifications began on February 4 and will continue for 30 consecutive weeks through September 14th, when the first round of regional online tournaments will take place. Each week, the top six players on poker website’s Leader Board will automatically become eligible to participate in the regional tournament. The regional round is divided into six distinct geographical regions – representing parts of the US and abroad -- totaling 180 players. This will be followed by a round of quarterfinals, also to be played online at DuplicatePoker.com.
Players within each region who survive the quarterfinals will be placed on a team consisting of seven players. These finalists will be invited to a land-based venue at which the semi-final and championship rounds will be played in a live format. The championship round will be scored both individually and as a team. This is a revolutionary new concept since individual and team play is rewarded. An announcement of the exact location and dates of play will be made when final arrangements have been made. Players who qualify for the 2008 Duplicate Poker World Championship will be provided with round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, and meals paid for by DuplicatePoker.com.
Best of all, it costs NOTHING to enter. The entire prize pool of $120,000 will be provided by DuplicatePoker.com. This means a new player who makes a very small deposit and plays at the game site for as short as a week could conceivably become the first “Duplicate Poker World Champion.”
