Let's cover the Basics
Each player is dealt two down cards, also known as “hole cards.” After an initial round of betting, players still in the hand see three up cards, also known as “the flop.” Then, there is another round of betting. A fourth card is dealt face up, called “the turn card.” This is followed by another round of betting. The final fifth card is then revealed face up, also known as “the river card.” There is one final round of betting. At the showdown, the player with the best five-card poker hand wins the pot. The fundamentals of poker are identical to regular Texas Hold’Em.
Goal and Strategy of Poker Game
While the simple objective is to make the best possible hand and win each pot, the greater goal is to outplay your opponents positioned at corresponding seats at other tables. You are not really competing against players at your table. Instead, your results are measured against players in corresponding seats at other tables who are dealt and who play the same cards as you do. If you sit in the #2 seat, your poker results are measured only versus all other players in the #2 seats at other tables during the session.
To maximize skill and minimize luck, each seat is dealt exactly the same duplicate hole cards. Each table sees identical flops, turns, and rivers. The luck-of-the-cards factor is eliminated. Poker is virtually 100 percent skill-based.
Your poker skills are stacked up against other players in nearly-identical circumstances. There are no “bad beats” in poker. Skillful play wins.
Formats
Poker can be played in three different formats. There are (1) tournaments, (2) quick play matches, and (3) sit and goes:
Tournaments – Players play in sessions which include a set numbers of deals. After each session, the top players advance to the next round. Most tournaments include 4 to 6 sessions, depending on the number of entries. After each session, half of the field is eliminated until the winners are eventually determined. Winners are the players with the highest scores. Scoring is determined by the total number of chips won or lost on all hands during the session.
There are also short tournaments, which include as few as three sessions. These tournaments play much faster than regular tournaments.
Quick Play – These matches are quick and easy to play. Normally, players are dealt 4 to 8 hands. At the end of the session, players with the highest scores win and divide the prize pool.
Sit and Goes – There are two different kinds of formats, a “Round Robin” and “Short” Sit and Go games. Round robins are comprised of heads-up play. Normally, there are five mini-matches with five deals in each. This means you play against every other player in the competition at some point. At the conclusion, the player with the highest score wins.
Short Sit and Go games include just two sessions. At the end of the first session half the field is eliminated, and half advances to the next round. At the end of the second session, point leaders share the prize money.
Capped Betting (most popular game)
This means players can bet only up to a certain number of chips each hand. Initially, the game utilized a no-limit betting structure, allowing players to bet any amount of the tournament chips they had in play.
However, most variants include levels of both pot-limit and no-limit betting. With a capped betting structure now in place, player results over the entire course of the round or session are weighed more fairly, thus further reducing variance and emphasizing skill.
In most tournaments, players start off each hand with 10,000 in chips. Cap betting means that players can bet only up to a fixed number of chips in each hand – for example, 1,000 chips per hand. With a cap placed on betting amounts, no single hand outcome guarantees success or failure.
